Kombucha as a nutrient supplier - compensating for deficits

In conversation with founder Laura of L-Complex

1. Please introduce yourself and L-COMPLEX briefly. Why the name and how did you come up with the idea to found L-COMPLEX?

I'm Laura and I founded L-COMPLEX at the beginning of 2019, parallel to my job at a Berlin start-up at the time. I have always been interested in healthy nutrition. I only found my way to nutritional supplements after a long health stumble. My realization: We live in a world full of new stress factors that make it difficult to eat healthy, get enough exercise, and have adequate relaxation periods. Chronic ailments such as migraines, intolerances or fatigue are now part of everyday life for most people. But we can actively do something about it! I would like to help people to understand their body better and help them through a holistic approach to more joy and health in life. The right nutritional supplements are the most important first step.

2. Nutritional supplements are trendy: What distinguishes your products from others?

The nutritional supplement market is very intransparent and is now flooded with products and various healing promises. Most of the products contain many synthetic and animal ingredients and additives that the body does not need and can even burden it. The products are hardly ever tested for purity, so they can be contaminated with pesticides, heavy metals and other toxins. Our products are all based on natural ingredients, are 100% tested for purity and are largely vegan. We produce in Germany according to the highest EU guidelines, for short supply routes and full control over supply chain as well as quality. Instead of plastic we use recycled glass for packaging. We try to work and produce in a CO2-neutral way. Our recipes are specially created together with our biochemists. We only use ingredients that have been scientifically proven to have a function / benefit in the body without burdening it. Through our experts we can also react quickly to new research results.

3. Why do so many people in a developed society like ours need additional supplements?

Shouldn't a conscious diet be enough to provide the body with the nutrients it needs? You would think so. Unfortunately, it is our developed society that is the problem: our nutritive soils are completely overloaded by agriculture, and the earth can no longer recover properly. As a result, food is nowhere near as nutrient-rich as it once was. In addition, our digitalized and fast-paced society lives in a completely abnormal stress level that prevents our bodies from properly absorbing and storing nutrients. Think of it this way: In the past, we used to run away from lions and in return, all other organs including our digestion were crippled so that we could survive. Today we have a high pulse rate due to the various media we consume on a daily basis as well as the daily stress of work, family and leisure. In the process, we sleep even less and targeted relaxation phases come too short. The result is the same. Hardly any human being today still gets the necessary nutrient intake to remain healthy in the long term. This is already clearly reflected in the increase in chronic physical and mental illnesses. And are we times completely honestly? Who still feels at 100% today? Hardly anyone! An optimized nutrient intake helps.

On your blog, you write that "emotional stress and anxiety are more present than before, and in the long term, these would significantly affect health". How can your supplements help?

The psyche and our physical well-being are closely related and behave in a quasi-symbiotic manner. A weak psyche influences nutrient absorption and the immune system, just as nutrition and the immune system also influence the psyche. Those who suffer from stress and anxiety should pay attention to nutrients that support the immune system as well as a normal psyche. Since our nutrient absorption mainly takes place in the intestines and 70% of our immune system is located in the intestines, we always recommend as a first step to build up the intestines by taking our Active Cultures. We also recommend Vitamin B Complex. The B vitamins are involved in almost every metabolism in the body and not only promote the immune defense (B6, B12), but also have a direct influence on the psyche (B1) and nervous system (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B12).

5. Do you have any tips on how to best support your immune system during the cold season?

If you don't already, you should clearly make sure to supplement with vitamin D in the winter. Vitamin D is absorbed solely through the sun's rays and cannot be produced by the body itself. It is therefore not surprising that up to 90% of Germans have a deficiency. Good to know: Vitamin D is actually a hormone and therefore also has an indirect influence on other hormones such as serotonin or our reproductive horm ones. So especially women should pay attention to a good level here. Additional antioxidants such as vitamin C and zinc support our immune defense against pathogens that circulate especially in winter. Otherwise, we recommend to pay attention to the sufficient intake of green vegetables, because they contain many valuable nutrients and usually come too short in the winter.

6. How important do you think the microbiome and a healthy gut is for nutrient absorption?

As previously noted, the microbiome is incredibly important. Nutrient absorption occurs primarily in the small intestine and can only function when our gut is in balance. So it's worth investing in a healthy gut environment, for example by eating the right foods and taking additional nutrients to keep our gut flora in balance.

A balanced intestinal flora is the be-all and end-all for our general well-being. That's why it's worth actively doing something for our intestinal health. Especially when we feel bloated, have difficulties with digestion or even suffer from intolerances, this is usually a sign that we do not have enough good intestinal bacteria.
